Known as an area of shepherds, the Bara Bhangal trek will offer you the views of gigantic Dhauladhar as well as Pin Panjal mountain ranges. 

This trek is steep and includes some of the most dangerous terrains. The lush green valley of Kullu will keep you amazed at every trail. Although it is a long trekking route, you will still enjoy the constant steep slopes that come on the way. 

Located at a height of about 4875 mts from sea level, the Bara Bhangal trek is now becoming a popular tourist point these days. It is surrounded by beautiful meadows, colorful flowers, and glaciers. During this trekking trail, you will pass through many attractions such as Kalihani Pass, Rajgundha, Lama Dugh, Riyali Thach, and others. Best time to start Bara Bhangal Trek 

The best time for Bara Bhangal Trek is the onset of the monsoon in June. Avoid doing this trekking trail after June as it experiences heavy landslides due to heavy rains. The real beauty of this region blossoms during summers when you witness profuse greenery and fresh flowers. The trek is closed during winter. 

Altitude and difficulty level of Bara Bhangal Trek 

If you are a beginner, the Bara Bhangal trek is not suitable for you. It is one of the most difficult treks situated at 16, 070 ft. This trekking trail has many ups and downs that make it a real trekking challenge for any trekker. 

Temperature of Bara Bhangal Trek 

The maximum temperature of Bara Bhangal Trek is 15 degrees Celsius. It can go below 0 degrees Celsius at night or during cold weather. You must carry warm clothes while going for your trekking because it has cold weather for many months.

Detail Itinerary

Lama dugh

Day 01: Manali to Lama Dugh

  • Altitude: 2050m – 3017m
  • Trekking distance: 4-5 hours, 12 km 
  • Trail type: Followed by Hadimba temple 
  • Water resources: There is one water supply point at school on the way. You must carry 2 to 3 liters of water. 
  • Trekking difficulty: Difficult 

Bara Bhangal Trek starts from Manali. We will all gather in Manali and obtain all the necessary licenses and proofs. As today’s journey is a long one, we will start it a little early in the morning. The road to Lama Dugh is covered with thick forests. You will see the true picture of different peaks in this journey such as the Deo Tibba, Indrasan, and Bara Shigri glaciers. 

You have to constantly move on steep slopes on this trail. After getting on a ridge, you will finally reach Lama Dugh campsite. Night stay is in tents on the first day.

Riyali view

Day 02: Lama Dugh to Riyali Thach

  • Altitude: 3017m – 3400m
  • Trekking distance: 3 to 4 hours, 12 km 
  • Trail type: Followed by Thanpri Tibba
  • Water resources: It is better to carry enough water for spending 3 hours
  • Trekking difficulty: Difficult

Day 2 is one of the most exciting days for trekkers. Because of a long tour, we will start our trek in the early morning after a light breakfast. Today, we all have to walk in sloppy areas constantly for many hours. Although it is a tiring trail, you will not feel tired on this trekking route because of the beautiful views of meadows. The full road includes many nice peaks such as Hanuman Tibba and Dhauladhar Tibba. 

After trekking for about 2 hours, you will reach Riyali Thatch. Riyali is an amazing place with huts of shepherds. We will spend the night in Riyali and discuss the next day’s itinerary.

Day 03: Trek from Riyali Thach to Kalihani Base Camp 

  • Altitude: 3400m-4010m
  • Trekking distance: 5 to 6 hours, km 
  • Trail type: Followed by Sighor
  • Water resources: It is better to carry enough water for spending 3 hours
  • Trekking difficulty: Easy 

Just like every day, we will start our trail after a light breakfast. This is day 4 and one of the longest days in the trekking journey. The trail is full of steep climbs, gushing streams and bushes, and trees. We will have to move through open meadows and walk on a steep trail. You will see Rani Sui Lake Then we will have to cross a stream and continue our path on a steep climb. This climb will take around 3 hours and so take enough water to get a good journey. 

Finally, we will reach the base of Kalihani Pass. At this point, you will be lucky to catch the glimpse of the Indrasan and Deo Tibba peaks. Overnight stay will be in our tents at Kalihani Base Camp.

Day 04: Trek from Kalihani Base Camp to Dhonku Thach 

  • Altitude: 4800m – 4725m
  • Trekking distance: 9 to 10 hours 
  • Trail type: followed by Kalihani Pass 
  • Water resources: There are very few water points on this route. You will have to carry enough water for the long trekking day. 
  • Trekking difficulty: difficult journey 

It is day 4 and you must be mentally ready to spend a long tiring day. We have to start trekking in the early morning after breakfast. We have to further walk on the steep climb to reach our campsite. Walking slowly on this climb will open elegant views of the Dhauladhar Ranges and Pir Panjal. You must take beautiful photos of these peaks with your camera. There are also alluring glacial lakes and glaciers on this route. After walking on a steep slope, we will reach our campsite. Our overnight accommodation will be in tents.

Himalaya in autumn

Day 05: Trek from Dhonku Thach to Dev ki Marhi 

  • Altitude: 4725m – 3850m
  • Trekking Distance: 5 to 6 hours 
  • Trail type: followed by Kalihani Pass 
  • Water resources: There are very few water points on this route. You will have to carry enough water for the long trekking day. 
  • Trekking difficulty: difficult journey

We will start trekking immediately after breakfast in the early morning. Today, we will have a difficult journey as a large part of the journey is through dense forests of Oak and Fir. This is a downward trail and we will meet several ups and downs. Because of the difficult slopes, we will reach the campsite at the noon. 

The most challenging part of this route is the steep incline before Dev Ki Marhi. After reaching the campsite, we will enjoy tea and light snacks. We all will spend the night in tents in the backdrop of the picturesque landscapes of Dev Ki Marhi. 

Dal marhi

Day 06: Dev Ki Marhi- Dal Marhi 

  • Altitude: 3850m- 3900m 
  • Trekking Distance: 5 to 6 hours 
  • Trail type: followed by Kalihani stream 
  • Water resources: There are very few water points on this route. You will have to carry enough water for the long trekking day. 
  • Trekking difficulty: moderate to a difficult journey

We will begin our trekking trail after a healthy breakfast in the morning. Today, we have to climb upwards towards Dal Marhi. The road is full of forests and rivers. You will also pass through the Kalihani stream. After this stream, we have to descend into the forests of Oak and Fir. Amazing views of flora and fauna and dense forests will leave you spellbound. 

There is a constant route with ups and downs while going to Dal Marhi. A vertical and steep climb to Dal Marhi will make you feel exhausted at the end of the day. But a glimpse of the splendid surroundings of Dal Marhi will become a memory to cherish. We will talk about the beautiful journey with a tasty dinner and a backdrop of wonderful surroundings. Night stay is in tents at Dal Marhi campsite. 

Bara Bhangal

Day 07: Dal Marhi- Bara Bhangal trek 

  • Altitude: 3900m- 2900m 
  • Trekking Distance: 5 to 6 hours 
  • Trail type: followed by River stream 
  • Water resources: There are not enough water points. You must carry a bottle of water that lasts for more than 6 hours. 
  • Trekking difficulty: moderate to the difficult journey

Today, we have to travel downwards towards the Bara Bhangal trek route. As usual, we will start our trekking trail in the early morning after breakfast. We have to go amid deodar forests along the river Ravi. You will see many different kinds of forests on this route such as pine, birch, and rhododendron. 

After continuing our path on a steep descent, we will reach Bara Bhangal. It is a small hamlet with huge fields and corn and rajma. It also has a satellite phone and a hydel power project. 

Bara bhalal trekking

Day 08: Acclimatization day at Bara Bhangal 

We will take a rest today at our campsite in Bara Bhangal. The weather conditions in this village are different from the other places that we went to before. It will take some time to adjust to this place. Bara Bhangal is a beautiful hamlet with vast acres of corn and Rajma. You can spend a few hours in the local sights with group members. 

We will discover the tradition and culture of the place. Apart from that, we will also take a few pictures of the beautiful landscapes of Bara Bhangal with our camera. Roaming in the surreal nature of this place will make you fresh for the next day’s journey. 

Trek to Bara bhagal

Day 09: Trek from Bara Bhangal to Mardh 

  • Altitude: 2900m- 3830m
  • Trekking Distance: 5 to 6 hours 
  • Trail type: followed by Thamsar Pass 
  • Water resources: This route has many water points. But it is better to take enough water for the journey. 
  • Trekking difficulty: moderate to the difficult journey

As we are fresh after a short rest, we will now start our trail after breakfast. Today, we have to go from Bara Bhangal to Mardh. It is going to be a long day with a lot of excitement. We will cross Thamsar Pass and walk for around 6 hours. After crossing Thamsar Pass, we will get into heaven of pine and birch forests. 

Walking in the abode of pine forests will make your journey more adventurous. After reaching Mardh, we will enjoy tea and snacks. At night, fun activities and tasty dinner will remove the tiredness of the body. Overnight stay is in tents at Mardh. 

Trek to palachak

Day 10: Trek from Mardh to Palachak 

  • Altitude: 3830m – 2400m 
  • Trekking Distance: 7 to 8hours 
  • Trail type: followed by Thamsar Pass 
  • Water resources: There is only one lake on this road. You will have to carry enough water for the long trekking day. 
  • Trekking difficulty:  Difficult journey

Today, the journey is difficult as well as interesting for everyone. We have to travel for around 8 hours thereby capturing panoramic views of Kangra Valley. We will cross through moraines and glaciers to reach Palachak. A small lake will appear soon after crossing these moraines. Apart from that, we will also witness lush green Kangra valley on this trail. 

The road to Palachak continuously descends. Forests, streams, and huge mountains will reconnect you to your inner self. We will spend a night in tents at Palachak campsite. 

Village

Day 11: Palachak to Bir 

  • Altitude: 2400m- 2300m 
  • Trekking Distance: 5 to 6 hours 
  • Trail type: followed by Kangra Valley 
  • Water resources: There are many streams from where you can carry water. 
  • Trekking difficulty: Easy

It is one of the easiest days of the trek today. The route is flat and simple and we will traverse through pine trees and mountain streams. Majestic Kangra valley will welcome you with wide arms. Do not forget to capture this valley’s views with your camera. We have arranged for a vehicle that will pick you up from Billing and drop you at Bir. We will spend a day at Bir. It is one of the elegant spots with breathtaking beauty. You would love the place and its environment. 

Trek to bir

Day 12: Departure From Bir

We will leave Bir after breakfast and, you can choose your own option either to stay to pick a flight to your city. You can spend some hours alluring Manali to explore its hidden spots.

Do you provide help for carrying personal belongings? 

Yes, you will get help from our team for taking your personal luggage by paying certain charges. The fees for offloading backpacks are:

  • INR 7000/- before 10 of trek date 
  • INR 8500/- after reaching at Manali

You should not carry more than 11 kg of luggage. No suitcases or trolley bags are allowed on the trek.
