This is one of the least explored treks because not many people have been there but one of the most interesting one.

During the trek, you will get to see many beautiful landscapes and epic peaks which will melt your heart. You will also get to see grasslands and glaciers. It is not that easy trek and only the experienced trekkers will find it moderate or someone who is looking for some really good challenge.

During the trek, you will get to know how beautiful Spiti is and you will adore its beauty. The best time for Sara Umga Pass trek is during July and October when the weather is not that harsh.

The difficulty level of the Sara Umga Pass trek

Sara Unga Pass Trek is one of the highest passes which is located at an altitude of about 16,500 feet. This pass is not explored by many people and it is also considered to be a difficult trek that is only good for experienced trekkers. It is advised that you follow your guide as the forest is deep and there are also many encounters with wild animals.

Best time to do Sara Umga Pass Trek

July to October is considered the best time to do the Sara Umga Pass Trek as during this time the weather is good as compared to the end of the year during which the region is covered with 

snow which makes the trek even more difficult and risky.

The temperature at the location

While on the Sara Umga Pass trek, you will experience extreme weather conditions. This region is normally very cool. During the summer season also the mornings are bearable but gain the temperature falls to below 10 degrees Celsius after sunset. The winters are very harsh. The temperature drops to -10 degrees during the night in the winter season. From November to January, you will notice snow everywhere.

Detail Itinerary

Tosh valley

Day 01: Kasol to Tosh Drive

  • Drive- 21 4 kilometres
  • Duration- 4-5hours
  • Distance- 3 to 4 kilometres
  • Altitude- 8038 ft.
  • Trek Difficulty- Easy to Moderate

On the first day, we will take a drive from the famous Kasol and travel to Tosh while we will be in the scenic Valley of Parvati. After reaching the Tosh Village, we will start our trekking from here and we will climb upwards along the Tosh Nallah. Here we will find the dense forest and then finally reach the beautiful Buddhaban. This will be a total of approx 5 hours of trekking.After the meal, you will stay overnight in tents which will be an amazing experience.

Sharam thach

Day 02: Trek to the Sharam Thach

  • Duration- 6-7 hours
  • Distance- 5 to 6 4 kilometres
  • Altitude- 11,500 ft. 
  • Trek Difficulty- Moderate to difficult

The next day we will be trekking towards the Sharam Tach which will be approximately 6 hours of trek. During the trek, you will be getting to see beautiful nature and landscape. Here while on the trek, you will also get to see the Tichu Glacier. After the exciting trek, we will reach the Sharam Thatch where we will stay overnight in tents.

Way to Shamshi thach

Day 03: Leaving the Sharam Thach and trek to Shamshi Thach

  • Duration- 5 hours
  • Distance- 3.5 4 kilometres
  • Altitude- 12,631 ft. 
  • Trek Difficulty- Moderate to Difficult

It is Day 3 and on day 3 we will leave the Sharam Thach and start our steep climb towards the Shamshi Thach. This trek will be along the beautiful Tosh River. After almost 5 hours of trekking, we will reach our next campsite and then stay there for the entire night. Spending overnight in tents will be a beautiful experience.

Kutta campsite

Day 04: Trekking towards the Kuta Thach

  • Duration- 7-8 hours
  • Distance- 4100m
  • Altitude- 13,451 ft. 
  • Trek Difficulty- Moderate to Difficult

Next morning we will leave the Shamshi Trek and start our trekking toward the Kuta Trek which will be a beautiful journey at the base of the Sara Umga Pass trek. We will be climbing here and the trek will be approximately 7 hours. While on the trek, you will get to see wonderful views of long peaks surrounded by forests. We will stay here for the entire night and leave for the next destination the following day.

Chhota dara

Day 05: Trekking towards Putiruni through Sara Umga Pass trek.

  • Duration- 8 hours
  • Distance- 5 4 kilometres
  • Altitude- 15,420 ft. 
  • Trek Difficulty- Difficult

Next morning, we will be leaving early since it will be a long journey of about 8 hours. We will aim to cross the Sara Umaga Pass before sunset. This journey will be a difficult one since the campsite is a bit steep and filled with snow. However, here you will get a wonderful view of parks covered in snow. After we reach the Putiruni, we will be staying here overnight in our cozy tents. This will mark the Day of our trek and after this, the journey will be relatively easier than before.

Spiti valley

Day 06: Moving forward towards Chota Dhara

  • Duration- 6 hours
  • Distance- 4.9 4 kilometres
  • Altitude- 12,140 ft
  • Trek Difficulty- Easy to Moderate

Next morning we will be leaving for Chota Dhara which will again be a long journey but it will be a much easier trek than before. There will be some ups and downs but we will reach our campsite within 6 hours of the trek and stay there in tents before our final day of the Sara Umga Pass trek

Drive from spiti to manali

Day 07: Final Drive towards Manali.

  • Duration- 5 hours

Day 7 will be the last day of our amazing trek and we will be driving on this day towards Manali. We will be reaching Manali late afternoon and this marks the end of our wonderful journey.
