Mount Kun Standing proudly at an altitude of 7077 meters in the Suru Valley of Zanskar Range in Ladakh, India. Mount Kun is the must climb peak for every mountaineer. It is located near Mt Nun Peak 7,135 meters in Ladakh region. Climbing Mount Kun is a thrilling expedition that needs a good amount of both training and practice and technical knowledge of climbing equipments.

Mount Kun Expedition is a wonderful climb that located in Zanskar range of Ladakh and  begins from Shafat Nala and takes many days to reach the summit of Mt. Kun, Climbing this peak is one of the most exciting events in the life of many mountaineers as it includes walking through various trail filled with unbelievable challenges like icy slopes, crevasses and glaciers.

This peak has an interesting history that you would love to know. The first successful ascent of Mount Kun was achieved in 1913 by an Italian expedition led by Mario Piacenza. This marked an early achievement in Himalayan mountaineering, considering the limited technology and logistical support available at the time. Mount Kun Peak experiences harsh weather conditions throughout the year which makes mountaineering even more challenging.

Best time to do Mount Kun Expedition

The best time to climb Mount Kun is during the summer months, from mid-June to mid-September. During this period, the weather is more stable, with relatively clearer skies and less extreme cold. This season offers the best window for mountaineers to tackle the technical challenges of the peak.

Detail Itinerary

Climber on top of the Mt. Kun

Day 01: Arrival at Delhi (300 m)

On day 1, you have to arrive in Delhi at your own expense. Book your tickets to Delhi in advance for a few weeks to avoid last-minute hassle. Explore some of the exotic places of Delhi with your group and introduce yourself to the mountaineering staff. Overnight stay is at Delhi hotel.

Day 02: Visit (IMF) Indian Mountaineering Foundation in Delhi

After breakfast, we will visit the Indian Mountaineering Foundation (IMF). This foundation handles all the paperwork and documentation processes related to trekking. You have to get the paperwork done at this foundation. For more details on this expedition, visit the library and museum of IMF.

We will get back to the hotel by noon and take a rest after lunch. In the evening, you can take a short walk in the nearby places of Delhi and take some amazing pictures with your friends. Enjoy dinner and get a good sleep for the night.

Day 03: Delhi to Leh

  • Altitude: 300 m to 3,500 m
  • By Air: Flight
  • Flight duration: 1:20 hours

We will start our trip after breakfast. We will leave the hotel and take a flight from Delhi to Leh. Our representatives will help you to reach the airport safely and complete all the travel requirements. Enjoy the beautiful journey from Delhi to Leh with panoramic views of icy-capped Himalayan mountain ranges.

The whole view of the Himalayan mountain ranges is like a paradise on Earth. After reaching Leh, we will accommodate in the hotel. Enjoy delicious meals with a group talk and the backdrop of surreal Himalayan ranges. Overnight stay us at hotel in Leh.

Day 04: A day in Leh (3,500 m)

Today, we will enjoy the fresh morning with a delicious breakfast. It is an acclimatization day and we have to spend the whole day at Leh. After breakfast, we will discover some of the most-talked monasteries and statues of Leh. We will visit the different local attractions of Leh such as Shey, Hemis, and Thiksey.

Take pictures of all these monasteries in your camera to cherish the memories of Leh in the future. Get back to the hotel and enjoy your meals. Overnight stay will be at the hotel of Leh.

Day 05: Leh to Kargil

  • Altitude: 3,500 m to 2,676 m
  • Distance: 220 Kms
  • Drive duration: 4 to 6 hours

We will start the drive right after our breakfast. Today, we will drive from Leh to reach Kargil. It is a total drive of around 230 km. The route from Leh to Kargil is simply fantastic with nature unveiling itself at every phase. Wilderness and huge mountains of Leh will take over your mind as well as soul.

On the way, we will get down for lunch hour. We will relax for some time and start our journey again after lunch. After driving for some time, you will be able to witness the barren mountains of Kargil. We will reach the hotel by evening and relax for some time. Have dinner and enjoy the sleep of the night at the hotel room in Kargil.

You will get a stable mobile network and Wi-Fi connection last at Kargil. It is advised to finish all your online payments and other online tasks as you will face poor internet connectivity ahead of the route.

Day 06: Kargil to Shafat Nala

  • Altitude: 2,676 m to 3900 m
  • Distance: 79 Kms
  • Drive duration: 3 to 4 hours

On day 6, we will begin our day after breakfast. Our representatives will help in completing all the formalities and paperwork for the further trip. We will check out from the Leh Hotel and start driving to reach Shafat Nala. The distance to be covered by car is about 14 km.

Shafat Nala is the main point from where will start our journey. On the way, we will cross the Suru River. The route is truly an alluring view to capture in the camera. We will reach Shafat Nala by noon and set up our camps. Spend time in the wonderful surroundings of Shafat Nala and get comfortable with the local weather.

We will go hiking at Shafat Glacier. This glacier is located in the middle of a beautiful place from where you can see the real beauty of Shafat Nala. Spend some time and feel the serene environment around you at this place. Take some good pictures with the backdrop of glacial mountains in your camera. We will get back in the tents by evening and have dinner. Enjoy a night'ssleep under the clear sky of Shafat Nala campsite.

Day 07: Shafat Nala to Base Camp

  • Distance: 6 - 7 Kms
  • Trek duration:  5 to 7 hours
  • Trail type: The trail consists of a mix of moraine, glacier crossing, and rocky terrain

Day 7 starts at Shafat Nala campsite. After breakfast, we will start our trek from this campsite and climb on the moraine to reach base camp. by crossing  suru river bridge on the way, The whole journey is 5 to 7 hours and it is a really an adventure to enjoy for any trekker. You will witness the surreal beauty of huge mountains at a considerable height. Every phase will turn into an adventure when you climb towards base camp.

We will reach Base camp by evening and accommodate ourselves in tents. After a short rest, we will enjoy our dinner and stay overnight at Base camp. Enjoy a good sleep under the sky of this wonderful land and clear sky.

Day 08: Acclimatization at Base Camp

  • Altitude: 4,500m

On Day 8th it’s our Acclimatisation day for high-altitude expedition to allow the body to adjust to reduced oxygen levels. Today will be take some rest at Base Camp while engaging in light physical activities like equipment  distribution, short hikes around the campsite and Shafat glacier to boost acclimatization. Team members will check everyone’s health for the higher altitude expedtion . During the day, you’ll also prepare personal gear for load ferry tomorrow.

Day 09: Load Ferry to Advanced Base Camp (ABC)

  • Altitude: 5,200m
  • Distance: Approximately 6-7 km
  • Route Type: Mixed including moraine and glacier sections

Today, the team will carry equipment and  to the Advanced Base Camp (ABC) to reduce the load for the upcoming ascent. The trail from Base Camp to ABC involves rocky moraine and parts of the glacier. Load ferry, is both physically demanding and critical for ensuring that all necessary gear reaches higher camps for upcoming days of our expedition for Mt. Kun.

Day 10: Move to Advanced Base Camp (ABC)

  • Altitude: 5,200m
  • Distance: 3-4 km
  • Route Type: Same as day 9

After yesterday’s load ferry, the entire team will move from Base Camp to the Advanced Base Camp. The trail requires careful steps over loose rocks and glacier ice, and the altitude gain will begin to feel more noticeable. After reaching ABC, we’ll set up our camp and prepare for further acclimatization and load ferrying to higher camps, overnight stay in (ABC).

Day 11: Rest Day at Advanced Base Camp

We planned this day as a rest day to let your body recover after the strenuous load ferry to Camp 1. This day is also important for further acclimatization at higher altitude. Team Broza Adventures  will use this time to review climbing techniques and ensure that gear and equipment are in proper condition for the next stage of the expedition.

Day 12: Acclimatization and Load Ferry to Camp 1 (Altitude: 5,800m)

  • Altitude: 6,152m
  • Distance: Around 3-4 km (one way)
  • Route Type: Glacier walk and steep ascents

Today is the combination of acclimatization and a load ferry to Camp 1. The climb becomes steeper, abd your technical skills will be tested as you traverse ice and crevassed glacier section. Load ferry is essential for gradually establishing camps further up on the mountains. After the load ferry, you will return back to ABC for rest and overnight stay in advance Base Camp.

Day 13: Move To camp 1

  • Altitude: 6,152 m
  • Distance: 3-4 km
  • Route Type: mixed terrain including snow, ice, and rocky sections.

Today the journey will start from Advanced Base Camp and climb to reach Camp 1 situated at an altitude of 6152. It is a difficult day as the trail is tough because the route has a steep climb over rock, snow and ice all three at the same route. Today the trekkers need to strictly follow the instructions from our expert trainers and pay close attention to the technique used. The Mount Kun expedition demands extreme focus and determination as the altitude increases, the trail becomes challenging and confusing. 

Day 14: Rest and acclimatisation at Camp 1

  • Altitude: 6152 m

After an hectic climb the body needs rest and recovery thus today the trekkers will take rest at Camp 1 situated at an altitude of 6152m. It is also required that the body is acclimatised for the coming days. It is advised to take short walks near the campsite to build stamina and get used to altitude. Staying hydrated and preparing the body for the challenges that awaits is mandatory. Due to altitude and climate even the rest day becomes tiresome so paying attention to recovery and health is vital.

 

Day 15: Load Ferry to Camp 2

  • Altitude: 6,493m
  • Distance: 2 - 3 km
  • Estimated time: 5 - 6 hours

Route Type:Steep snow slopes with the need for technical climbing skills

 

Load ferry to Camp 2 at 6,493 meters and the route involves steep glacier sections with crevasses. The ascent is steep and goes through several snowfields. Air here gets thinner and thus the trekkers need to prepare for this. Team Broza Adventure ensures that all the participants are taken care of as we are well-equiped to handle the extreme situation.

Day 16: Move to Camp 2

  • Altitude: 6,493m
  • Distance: 2 - 3 km
  • Estimated time:  6- 7 hours

Route type: Snow and ice covered route thus involves use of crampons and ropes.

On day 16 the team will move to Camp 2. It is a very hectic day as the high altitude will strongly impact the movement and breathing. The route to Camp 2 moves through snow and ice thus using safety ropes and other equipments vbecomes a necessity. 

Day 17: Summit Attempt

  • Altitude: 7,077 m
  • Distance: 5- 6 km
  • Estimated time: 8 - 10 hours

Route type: the most exciting day, today is the summit day. The final trek to Mount Kun summit starts at midnight. The ascent is steep and thus technical and professional is required. The trek is difficult but then the view from an altitude of 7,077 meters is truly rewarding. From the top the beautiful sights of Zanskar Range and beyond totally worths every step taken. The climb is covered in 8 to 10 hours and then we reserve some moments to celebrate at the mountain. After getting clicked and soaking in the moment we decend again to Camp 2. 

Day 18: Reserve Day

Reserve Day is the buffer day which is kept in hand to combat any unforeseen delays that could occur due to poor weather or physical challenges. Summit attempts in the Mount Kun expedition requires flexibility and endurance so that the climbers can safely complete the expedition.

Day 19: One More Reserve Day

From day 9 to day 19 we have to climb to the summit and then to Mt Kun and return to Base camp. These 11 days are reserved for climbing to the summit point with the expedition group and leaders. However, the itinerary may change due to hard weather conditions on some days we added as reserve days.

You will be informed every minute of the latest trek updates. Overnight stay will be in our tents. You will see the changing patterns of nature and weather in high-altitude areas of Mt Kun every day.

Day 20: Descend to Camp 1

  • Distance: 5-6 km
  • Duration: 5-6 hours.
  • Route Tupe: Snow and ice descent, technical at some points.

After a successful summit, we begin our descent to Camp 1. The descent is easier on the body but still requires caution. The snowy slopes can be slippery, and participants need to carefully manage their pace. Broza Adventurers ensures that everyone is guided back safely to lower altitudes.

Day 21: Descend to Base Camp

  • Distance: 6-7 km
  • Duration: 5-7 hours.
  • Trail Type: Mixed terrain: snow, rocks, and moraine.

On Day 20, we will descend all the way back to Base Camp. After days of high-altitude trekking, the return to Base Camp will feel like a major accomplishment. Participants can reflect on their journey, take in the scenery one last time, and celebrate completing the Mount Kun climb.

Day 22: Base Camp to Shafat Nala

On day 22, we will start the trek from base camp to reach Shafat Nala. We will take the same route that we took while ascending the base camp. Be careful at every stage as the road might change at every stage.

By evening, we will reach Shafat Nala and spend some time in this region . Our overnight stay is at Shafat Nala campsite. After dinner, we will enjoy a good sleep of night.

Day 23: Shafat Nala – Kargil

We will begin our trek of day 23 from Shafat Nala campsite in the morning after breakfast. We have to drive to reach Kargil. You will again come across the beautiful scenery of Kargil on this trip. We will reach Kargil by evening and spend the rest of the day at the hotel.

Spend some time in the beauty of Kargil and click amazing pictures of this place. Have dinner and take a rest in your hotel rooms.

Day 24: Kargil to Leh

On day 24, we will start the journey from Kargil to reach Leh. After breakfast, we will start our drive from Kargil to reach Leh. Enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of Leh from a high altitude and have lunch. We will reach Leh by evening and spend time in the nearby locations to take some pictures of nature.

Overnight stay is at Leh hotel. Take dinner and enjoy a good sleep night in your rooms.

Day 25: Leh to Delhi

From Leh, we have to take a flight to reach Delhi. Feel the beauty of Leh by watching the huge mountains covered in thick clouds. Enjoy the view of the majestic Himalayan mountain ranges from the flight.

After reaching Delhi, we will do the check-in procedure in the hotel room. As it is the last day, we will spend time together. Spend a good time in Delhi and visit the nearby spots of the city. Share your experiences with the group and enjoy dinner together. Overnight stay is at Delhi hotel.

Day 26: Departure from Delhi

On day 26, we will start our return trip from Delhi. After breakfast, we will visit the airport to take our respective flights to reach home. Give a goodbye to our team and friends with thehope of meeting again in the future on the trip. We all will head towards our home.

Essentials to carry on Mount Kun Expedition

You must carry the important things on the expedition such as:

  • Windproof jacket and waterproof jacket
  • Down jacket
  • Personal medicines
  • Backpack

  • 1 head torch with 4 to 5 extra batteries
  • Personal kit containing regular items such as toothpaste, toothbrush, toilet paper, sunscreen lotion, soap, hand towel, moisturizer and some creams

  • 3 to 4 pairs of trekking shoes and 3 pairs of woolen socks

Things to remember while going on an expedition

You must keep in mind certain things before going on the Mount Kun expedition such as:

  • Consult your doctor and get a full body checkup before the trek
  • Get the fitness level checked by the doctor
  • Do not carry any heavy luggage or trolley bag on the trek
  • Do workouts and exercises daily to gain a good level of stamina in the body
  • Follow every instruction given by trekking leaders
  • Respect locals and their rituals
  • Follow timings correctly every day
  • Do not smoke or consume alcohol while going on a expedition
  • Improve your technical skills before going on the trip
  • Book your flight, train, or bus tickets to Delhi before a few months
