The Mentok Kangri Expedition stands out for its blend of serene landscapes and demanding mountaineering challenges. Located near the Tso Moriri Lake in Ladakh’s remote Changthang Plateau in India, Ladakh has many hidden treasures to explore once in a lifetime. It is one of the most fascinating trekking and Climbing destinations for adventurers. One such treasure is Mentok Kangri or Mentok. It is a high peak Nestled at an altitude of 20, 702 ft, Mentok Kangri has tough slopes and ridges to cross on the way.

Reaching at top of Mentok Kangri Peak will leave you spellbound as it offers mesmerizing views. The name of the peak Mentok is derived from a wildflower that grows in the nearby region. You have to climb the icy slopes of the mountain to finish this summit. It takes you through the beautiful villages of Ladakh, isolated valleys, and alluring monasteries of the ancient period.

This mountain peak gives a surreal view of Tso Moriri and the nearby peaks such as Chamser and Lungser Kangri. It is one of the beautiful trails of Ladakh that takes you through several wonders of the Ladakh region. Although it is an easy climb but you need a strong physical fitness and trekking experience to finish this summit.

Best Time to go for the Mentok Kangri II Expedition

Pick the time between June and September to go for the MentokKangri II Expedition. The weather conditions are clear in these months with blue skies and cool temperatures. There is no snowfall or rain in these months.

Because of clear skies and favorable weather conditions, the trekkers can easily climb the peak. Good weather decreases the risk of road accidents as well.

Detail Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival At Manali Preparation and Acclimatization

On day 1, we have to acclimatize to make our expedition easier. We all meet at Manali and drive to Solang Valley. Our team members will give the important instructions to follow on this expedition. Introduction with our trek leaders and follow their tips. We will explore Solang village or Anjani Mahadev for our acclimatisation walk and capture some pictures with our camera.

We will return to the campsite and eat dinner. Then we will have a good sleep in our camp. A good rest is necessary to get used to the local weather of Manali.

Day 02: Manali to Sarchu drive

  • Altitude: 4201m
  • Driving distance: 230 km
  • Total time: 7 to 8 hours

On day 2, we will start a car ride from Solang Valley  to reach Sarchu. After breakfast, we will begin driving towards Sarchu which is a halt point. After reaching Sarchu we will start  accommodations for trekkers who have to go further to the Mentok Kangri II expedition. The whole route is amazing with a sight of green landscapes and blue skies.

As you move further on your journey, this place shows high passes, waterways, and remote crevasses. It has many challenging paths filled with river crossings, canyons, and steep edges. We will reach Sarchu by evening and rest in our tents. After a short rest, we will take tea and enjoy the lap of nature in the Sarchu region.

Overnight stay will be at Sarchu campsite on day 2.

Day 03: Sarchu to Karzok drive

  • Altitude: 5065m
  • Driving distance: 220 km
  • Total time: 8 hours

On day 3, we will start driving from Sarchu campsite after breakfast. It is again a long route that goes through deep valleys and plateaus. Although it is a long route, we will enjoy its scenic magic and elegance. We will cross a huge valley of the Tsarap River and several hairpin bends.

This drive will connect us to flat roads for around 40 km. You will simply love driving on this pass in the car as it shows some hidden treasures of Ladakh. The route is just like a dreamy land covered with small streams and beautiful landscapes. We will stop at one of the halts for lunch and relax for some time.

By evening, we will reach Karzok and rest in our tents. We will spend some time in the beauty of Karzok and have dinner. We will stay at Karzok campsite at night on day 3.

Day 04: Acclimatization in Karzok

We will spend 4th day at Karzok itself. It is an acclimatization day to get comfortable with the local weather conditions. Acclimatization is necessary to complete the Mentok Kangri II expedition.

We will visit the beautiful Tso Moriri Lake located in the Karzokregion. Take some amazing pictures with the backdrop of this lake with your teammates. We will get back to the tents and have dinner. Overnight stay on 4th day is at Karzok campsite.

Day 05: Karzok to Base Camp

  • Altitude: 5250m
  • Trekking distance: 8 to 9 km
  • Trek Time: 6 to 7 hours

Start your day with a healthy breakfast. On day 5, we will start trekking from Karzok campsite in the morning. It is a complicated trek as we have to climb upwards. It is a tiring day of trekking from Karzok to Base Camp. We will come across moraines as we climb uphill.

You will soon experience a drop in the temperature and oxygen level as you climb uphill. Continue your journey and witness the gigantic peaks of Parcha Kangri and Golap Kangri on your way. It is a mesmerizing scene that will take your breath away.

We will reach the base camp by evening. After reaching the base camp, we will rest in the tents. We will enjoy a good dinner time and have a nice sleep in our tents at Base Camp.

Day 06: Base Camp to Summit Camp

  • Altitude: 5400m
  • Trekking distance: 4 km
  • Time: 3 to 4 hours

On day 6, we will get up early and have breakfast. After breakfast, we will start our trek from base camp to reach Summit camp. Although it is a very short trek, we will still need a high level of energy to complete it. The trek is a challenging route where we will climb on the headwall section with ropes.

Our team leader will assist you at every step of the trekking journey. You have to use mountaineering equipment to complete this trekking section. The oxygen level will reduce as you climb upwards. By noon, we will reach the Summit camp and take a rest for the rest of the day. Enjoy the day at this point is last in our trekking expedition.

We will have dinner and enjoy a relaxing sleep in our tents. Our campsite for an overnight stay is Summit Camp. 

Day 07: Summit Camp to Summit and Back to Base Camp

  • Altitude: 5250m
  • Trekking distance: 4 to 5 hours
  • Time: 5 to 6 hours

On day 7, we will trek from summit camp in the morning after breakfast. Today, we have to travel from summit camp to summit and get back to the base camp. It is again a long route and tiring trek starting from summit camp and ending at Base camp.

We have to travel downhill today from summit camp to summit. We have to cross many difficult sections on this route. We will reach Base Camp by night. After dinner, we will have a nice sleep in our tents as we had a long tiring trekking expedition.

Day 08: Base camp to Manali

  • Altitude: 2050m
  • Trekking distance: 4 km
  • Time: 7 to 8 hours

On day 8, we will begin our trek from Base camp in the morning after breakfast. Today, we have to travel from Base Camp to Manali which is again a long route. We will take the same route that we took before to reach Base Camp. On the way, we will travel through Karzok village and other places in this region.

We have to travel on a difficult road at every step of this trek. We will reach Manali by evening and rest in our tents for some time. After dinner, we will enjoy a good sleep after a long tiring day of trekking. Overnight stay is at Manali on the 8th day.

Day 09: Departure from Manali

On day 9, we will depart from Manali after breakfast. We will all separate from Manali to our respective destinations. Click some pictures and save all those sweet memories in your camera to cherish them for years. You can also stay in Manali for a rest after a long journey.

Day 10: Buffer Day

We have considered the 10th day as a buffer day. You can enjoy a relaxing day at Manali to recover from a tiring and long trekking expedition. Explore the local points and click some amazing pictures of Manali with your buddies.
